View Full Version : 63 Dart Overhaul

I've had this dart just over a year now after selling the pop I had. I wanted something to scratch the muscle car itch I've had for a wile, but since I couldn't afford a real one and the falcon I rung up to buy had just sold, I got this, a 1963 Dodge Dart Arizona car from new = 0 rust! When I bought it, it was a complete running car with a 318 small block mopar, 904 box and 8 1/4 rear axle, all of which were fitted in the states as it would have only come with a slant 6, but as it transpired it seemed to be fitted by a 4 year old from 50 yards away...:shake: Having got excited when it was first on the road I took it to the paint shop who painted my pop. When asked when they could paint it, they said 'now!' So, that was it, the day after it was stripped down and in for paint. While it was off for the paint, I ordered new carpet and seat foam and upholstery from Legendary Auto Interiors in the states which was relatively cheap in comparison to the trimmers and easy to fit (I'm not trimmer by a long shot!) Having got the car back from paint and the new interior fitted the brakes got upgraded on the front to discs from a later A-body and then the torque thrust originals added to complete the look. I drove it about locally last summer but with the problem with the fitting of the engine and the original 1963 wiring still in place it didn't go far...then yesterday the engine came out, yep, all in the wrong order I know but it's all a bit late for that now so it's just a case of re-doing what the Americans failed to do, fit the engine properly and re-wire it so it doesn't burst in to flames....and then probably re-paint it once we've finished chipping, scratching it and the weather has took it's toll on it, oh and the leaking screen rubbers are yet to be sorted... Anyway, here's the pictures so far...

Well, since the old man isn't so good at keeping things up to date I will  the motor is all painted Chrysler small block blue now, and is mounted back on the fresh engine bay on new mounts I made. To fit it correctly the firewall had to be modified to clear the dizzy so a flat peace was welded in and a new wiper motor bracket made. While the motor was out it only made sense to replace all the wiring, mainly because it could combust at any moment, and partly to the fact that wherever it was discounted from anything it just fell to bits...:shake: so now the motor is back in, running and unlikely to drop out. Aso the car is no longer sat on the front open to the elements but sat in a nice clean work shop along a few other mopars, including the power wagon from gasser circus. With that a few more ideas have come to mind.... we shall see how this pans out :D

It seems like there has been loads done over the winter to the ol' Dart but none of which you can see...just little bits of finishing off here and there to get it ready for a test and back out. The only cosmetic change has been the wheels. After buying a pair of N.O.S bias belted tyres from the northern swap meet the old man sold the racing mags (no persuasion from me, honest ;) ). In their place there is a pair of steels on the rear, painted to match the interior trim and break up all the black, wrapped in the wide trac rubber. Up front is a pair of original 60's alloy center, steel rim A.R.E rip offs, yes, it's going super stock... 'Fashion Victim' maybe? ;)

You both should be well happy with that, love the lettering, and the bonnet scoop just changes everything for the better as well. Me I'd probably put steelies all round, which is a big change for me as I don't usually like steels but on that it looks the nuts!!

Had a Great weekend at the Hot Rod Drags. The old man took 'his car' ( even though he was saying its just going to me my car ;) ) down the track first in drive, in street trim and no burnout ran a 17.2 at 81mph. I then got my turn getting a PB of 16.2 at 83 mph, we think if we get a tech on it and shift manually there is a 15 in it, which isnt to bad for the stock motor! Then the attention it got was unbelievable! so much so that it was awarded a Dirt Dozen trophy by the NSRA which we are over the moon...oh and keep an eye in customcar... ;)
