Ta, and yup, the photo was from last years HRD's.

I spent about two hours last night looking for the disc that had all the really early photos on it, and can't find it. They were also all on the computer, but when it took a dump all of the photos were recovered and put on another disc, which I can't find either.
They were also on Imagecave, but that's gone tits up too.
Balls.

Are you ready???

Started with this:

Which quickly (in a week) became this:

Then work stopped due to me changing jobs, us having no garage blablabla, it sat outside of the inlaws for approx 18 months under a tarp, until...

So, on closer inspection, the Herald chassis was rotten as feck, and the front end was too wide, so I/we made a new chassis:

There are more that I have found, including the pickup bed making afternoon photo's, but I'll do them another night...!!!

bigyellataxi
10-07-13, 07:38 PM
How I made a pickup bed in an afternoonish:

First off, plan it all out, and do some preliminary work whilst at work on a Saturday, bending tubes and hole sawing:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb6e0814ac.jpg

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb6f314bbf.jpg

Then start to put it all together:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb744ce064.jpg

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb75b824a5.jpg

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb76f72758.jpg

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb78a50716.jpg

Use some thinner tube for the top:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb7b5c5cb8.jpg

Then use what sheet steel is/was available at the time (for free), if I was to do it again I'd use full sheets...

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb7f3ccfd7.jpg

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb8081f83e.jpg

Then weld on the top tube:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb83b48d8e.jpg

Never seen what it started as, but did see it at the HRD and liked what I saw well done and good luck for the future

bigyellataxi

Then fold the tops over the thin tube to give shape:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb89734941.jpg

Weld up fully:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb8c5a6659.jpg

And find out you have a nice curve:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb8d464405.jpg

Ah well, not to worry...!!!

Narrow a full size tailgate approx 3 feet so that it fits in the hole:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb931bb5df.jpg

Which is hung on fabricated hinges, made from some tube and flat steel stock.

Which gives you this:

http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/imagehosting/usr_images/6/7/67_51ddb9985dc39.jpg

There have been some additions to it since the photos, namely end cappings and I double skinned the top rollover (under the roll) as it seemed unfinished, but it took from getting home @ approx 12-30pm until 4-30pm on a Saturday afternoon.

And if I can do it, damn near all of you can do it too...!!!

To be honest Jane, all there is left of the Herald is the, now narrowed 4", front suspension, and the spear from the bonnet that runs done the rear of the cab...!!!

Nothing else survived...!!!

My trusty 9" with a cutting disc in it, gets a bit lairy when you first flick the switch, the disc wobbles like feck until it's up to speed...

I use it for cutting all the thick/big stuff, like tailgates...!!!

Made this today from 'cut wrong' 18x2 tube, ends were bent with mandrel bender at work, curves applied via my arm and a vice...!!!

I had a bit of a play with the Moggie roofskin that I have, but it's too curved and wouldn't sit right, even cut to fit the spars across and tacked on.

So, plan B, chicken wire, foam from work and some vinyl.

Just need a rear window, see 'Wanted' add...!!!

Loads!!!

Anything in particular???

Basically what was on page three got covered with a Beetle roof skin, and some Moggie Minor bits to finish, there were a few more tubes put in, but nothing substantial.

Best thing to do is come look at it at some shows this year (hopefully), I'll take the roof off and show you...

Chaley, ah, the racing stripes...

The new bed was made with 'new' pallet wood, but it was too wide with all of the 'new' stuff, so I had to reuse some of the older, weathered, strips...

:yeahthat:
really innovative fabricating on the roof too.

Rather than 'just' skinning it John, I originally wanted a 'carson' style roof, but the cost of the covering/padding seemed a bit out of my range, so that's why it kinda progressed...

The faffing around was to give the roof some lines, as the beetle roof had a swageline in it I thought I'd carry it on down the rear, but I had to make them... Then I thought it would be good to have TWO swagelines down the sides, so I made them too...

It's rough, but in keeping with the rest of the car, plus I like the whole look now with the roof ON....
