Quick update.
All has ground to a halt :mad:
The cam wont fit in the new cam bearings so the cam tunnel needs honing.
Last week I trapped a nerve in my back so can hardly walk and can't move anything heavy......
Just as well I'm not in a hurry to finish :giggle:
At least you know what needs doing to the engine. Now all you need do is get better, trapped nerves are a complete bugger and happen when you least expect it so hope your recovery is quick, but as you have probably been told, just take it easy. Good luck.:tup:

Finally got off my arse and got the block to Serdi in Uxbridge to have a look at the cam fitting problem.
They looked at the block and said sometimes the cam tunnels are under sized so will need honing out.
Also looked at the bores and said "Have these been honed?"
Well I paid for a finish hone to 4.390" when the block was sent over.
After measuring with an internal mic, turns out the finish hone had not been done, another £160 to find.
Serdi are ordering me some wider cam bearings from Dura Bond.
This is a common tweek in the Ford racing world.
Gives a 0.80" wider surface than the standard bearing to spread the load, particularly on the front bearing that takes the load from the dissy and oil pump.
All the bearings on a BBF are the same diameter and do not get smaller as they go back in the block like a lot of engines.
Due to the bore hone they asked for the pistons to make sure all fitted OK, second round trip involved :doh:
Just waiting for the final bill!
Hey at least if it's being finished machined over here it should be correct...I would be chasing the yanks for some cashback now...

They seemed very conscientious.
Pointed out things that I would have no experience with.
They are sorting out the new bearings etc.

The block is back from Serdi. Have to say Matt there is a top bloke. The cam tunnel was at the low end of tolerance so got honed to spec.
He also pointed out the "finished hone" I'd got from the States was a bit rough. I dropped the pistons down to them and they did a finish hone for me to the correct size. He said there was 0.001" clearance originally so the pistons would have fitted OK then the engine would have seized solid after about 2 minutes.
As Serdi a Dura Bond bearing dealers they managed to get me a set of the wider bearings for a BBF. The cam now has more surface area to sit on and spread the load better. Particularly on the front bearing as it takes the distributor and oil pump drive.

Found the most boring job in the world....filing piston ring gaps.

Top ring and 2nd ring gap set at 0.028" oil scraper gap 0.017". These seem quite big gaps but its whats on the chart for a motor running a 150-300 shot of nitrous.

Just need to order a new set of bearings for a BBC rod (2.2") not a Ford!!!!
Got some time in the garage on Sunday afternoon.
Finished filing burs off piston rings, checked rod bearing clearances, fitted all rings and used new ring compressor to fit. How easy was that...just drop the piston in ,place in the bore and tap with a hammer handle no fuss, slid straight in.
I'm using Comp Cams engine building lube on the shells. Each rod bolt has to be tightened individually and stretched 0.065" so they are all equal, none of this torque wrench stuff :). Then fitted new woodruff key and lower cam timing chain sprocket.
Just trying to source a bronze cam thrust plate. Found one in the States but the seller id being funny about posting to the UK....

After some tooing and frowing,calculations came up with 106.5 degrees center line.

The cam card says 104 so 2 degrees retarded, was able to used the adjustable cam sprocket and advance 2 degrees to get to 104.5.

Took a while as each rod bolt (Eagle ARP2000) had to individually be measured before and after stretching. Got 0.065" on each bolt so they should all be equally tight.
Got oil pump and pickup mounted. The Ford Racing pump is made by Melling and was $20 cheaper than the Melling equivalent.

Just got to enlarge hole in gasket to the block.
These pumps have a habit of cracking through the mounting neck to I will also be making a brace from the pump to the front main cap to steady things.

Checked depth of oil pan 8". So around 1\2" clearance between pick up and bottom of oil pan. Perfect for the Ford BB.

Tried on oil pan and it wouldn't sit down at the front of the block. It was the windage tray fouling the new pump brace!
Re-bent the brace. Just got clearance for the crank weight.

Now found out I need the head locating dowels for both sides. More little stuff to order.
The spark plugs recommended for the head are Autolite AR3924s. Got a cost to import, £8.50 each!!!

Fitted lifter oil gallery plugs. The plugs in the front of the block have a taper on the back, a flat backed plug would cause a restriction in the oil way behind the LH one.

Installed timing chain cover, forgot to take a picture of the timing chain in place. I didn't forget it. Cam sprocket is held on with a 3/8" ARP bolt and extra thick washer. A common mod in the States is to have the cam drilled and threaded to 7/16" then use a Chevy crank bolt and washer to hold the sprocket in place. Fitted one piece pan gasket over chain cover. That's not blood on the floor, the timing chain was soaked in Comp Cams installation fluid (bright red) before fitting. The clamps are there as I suddenly realised I don't have any 4" x 5/16" bolts for the top of the timing cover. The crank spacer was fitted with the chain cover to centre it properly so the oil seal is sitting evenly all round. Have got the woodruff key somewhere. Am just waiting on a hub for the ATI balancer. The one that came with mine has a 3/16" key way I need a 1/4" key way.

They are a multi layer head gasket. Mine are stainless. The two outer parts have a coating on them that seals against the head and block, they can be reused.Quote:

The new ATI hub (on the right) arrived on Friday, big thanks to Marc at Performance Unlimited for sorting that out.
Did the usual bloke thing, fitted it together....none of the holes lined up. Got the original hub back out, none of the holes lined up!
Spent half an hour faffing around, then read the instructions.There is an offset hole in the balancer for alignment purposes and the correct hole in the hub is marked with a small dot. Found the dot, things still didn't line up. Then turned the hub round! all 6 holes suddenly fell into alignment.

Evidently Ford engines over 500cu in are known as Elephant motors. So we have something rare in the garage....an Orange elephant!

Then thought I may as well fit the balancer. 5/8" UNF rod was installed in the crank bolt hole.

Balancer was slid on the rod and a thick washer and nut run up to it. Two nuts locked on the end of the rod to stop rotation.

All was going to plan until the balancer got half way on then stuck solid!!! Can't move it on or off even after applying heat.
Now waiting for a balancer puller kit to arrive.

Placed new roller lifter in the holes and got out my adjustable pushrod.

After setting up the rocker at 90 degrees to the valve retainer and doing the various tweeks the rod length came out at 9" for the inlet and 9.191" for the exhaust.
