KOOL FBS 1- vauxhall victor fb (AHW360B)

I have posted about this car on a few places on the internet, purely as a tribute to my all time favourite custom car, for a more in depth look at its history, please check out the link at the end of this post.
    cheers. paul.

This for me is 'THE' modified fb, originally built by a guy named Russ Hancox in 1994/1995.
Russ bought the car for 925 through the owners club and debuted it on the custom car scene in june 1995, (hayling island i think) after a 9 month build, costing 2500.

Russ apparently started on the uk vw scene, and, actually, if you study the modifications on this, stock bodywork, slammed and narrowed suspension, 5-spoke wheels (similar to empi's) the mods are not too different from the resto cal vws.

This car was built as an interim car for a pro street mk2 consul project that never got finished, and it replaced a resto cal volkswagen notchback and another fb wagon (apparently satin black in colour), fitted with a fiat twin cam engine that Russ bought off a mate to tidy up.
The first fb wagon apparently got written off according to the custom car feature of this car.

In may 1996 (24th-27th) Russ took the fb to the 'RUN TO THE SUN' weekend where the car won a top 10 trophy in the show n shine. also, the car was featured for 'custom car'. A full centrespread and cover car feature, as well as a picture of it in the run to the sun review appeared in the august 1996 issue of custom car magazine.

The car briefly ran redwall tyres in 1999 as one picture showed in custom car magazine, also, although not confirmed, I think the car received its 3.9 range rover engine it still has, along with a jaguar mk2/9''ford hybrid axle.

Russ debuted his next custom car, a very low 1951 Plymouth suburban in 2002, so I assume that's when this was sold?

A couple of years later, it came up for sale in march 2004 issue of custom car for 5000, still looking basically the same, except it sat a little higher on the suspension front, didnt have redwall tyres on that had been fitted in 1999, and was advertised as having a 3.9 rover engine instead of the 3.5,the contact name in the advert was Chris Chapman.

The car must have then been bought by SIMON PINION (son of the owner of real steel), because the next owner bill bailey said that he bought it from real steel owners son si. Simon didn't have it long though, because Just a few months later in the july 2004 issue of custom car was the next time it turned up, again for sale for 5000 ono, but with a different contact number,(Middlesex), where real steel is based, the car was also fitted with an extra window sticker fitted to the rear hatch window reading KROQ which I think is a radio station.

Bill bailey (no, not the comedian), was the next man to own it, who didn't mind changing the car, he had to in some ways cos the car was apparently an overheating used mess by this stage, I cant help thinking that if it wasn't for Bill, the car would have probably gone downhill fast or been stripped for parts

Among other things, the list below are some of the jobs bill did to the car

1.Spare bonnet, vented, painted black and fitted with 'poncy nascar hood/wires'.
2.front valance removed, Volvo 740 radiator, fan, all new stainless hoses and braided sleeving, posh anodised ally ends and stuff.
    3.repaint edelbrock manifold.
4.fit edelbrock 500 carb (in place of the holley).
5.fit new fuel regulator and fuel pressure gauge.
    6.general tidying/routing etc h.t leads and wires.
7.clean and paint loads as went along, n/s/r wing chrome strip removed?
8.strip out dash pad, clean dash back to metal and painted.
9.tacho and shift light back lit blue ontop of dash.
10.door cards off for a sort out and to fix door mechanisms.
11.50's style lady stickers on dash top, hanging from rear view mirror, dinky fb victor on dash, 8-ball steering wheel knob, 8-ball window sticker added to bottom left corner of rear hatch window, nsra and nasc stickers fitted to centre top of windscreen.
12.worn dizzy and then ign amp packs up.
    13.replace dizzy, amp and coil.
    14.header resurfaced and coated.
15.added new headman turbo silencers-crisper running all around.
    16.remove original rev counter.

The car had a mini feature in Retro cars magazine in the December 2005 issue, it was probably at this point that the water temp and oil pressure gauges were added to the steeing column.

One last thing that was mentioned by bill was a plan to fit a 327ci chevy engine, which bill actually started to put together, but never finished or fitted, as bill got an offer that he couldn't refuse for the car, so let it go around about july 2006, the car was then sold and owned by Colin Clarke who lived in jersey (not the isle of wight as I originally thought), so, the car travelled quite a distance to its new home.

colin didn't have it long when he put it up on ebay in October 2006 for buy it now 6000, the car didn't sell in the auction.

The car then moved back onto these isles and was then owned by Steve willmott from Stevenage who swapped his '66 ford ranchero for it. Steve, a member of the outlaws rod n drag club in herts, did a few changes to it, mainly cleaning and tidying what was already there and returning it to close to the Russ hancox spec, apparently the car came with loads of spares in the back, inc the black vented bonnet, which must have been removed by Colin.

Among the changes observed at this time were-

(BODY)- all window stickers removed inc valley hotrod shop, nasc and nsra stickers fitted to centre top of windscreen (later removed when car was for sale), new number plates, valance refitted, new vin plate fitted to bulkhead, n/s/r wing chrome trim refitted, outlaws rod n drag club sticker fitted first to centre bottom, then centre top of rear hatch window.
(INTERIOR)- dinky fb now missing, race tacho removed, door cards, carpet and foot well kick panels refitted, 8-ball steering wheel knob, 50s style lady stickers removed.

Steve then put the car up for sale on the NSRA forum on the 1st march 2008 for 6000ono and it was bought by its current owner Robert Sellers on 14th may.
Another pic of the car appeared in a show report in the july 2008 issue of custom car.
Retro cars magazine ran a full feature of the car which appeared in the February 2009 issue, by this time the car was owned by fellow outlaws rod n drag club member ROB SELLERS.

Rob has owned the car since may 2008, by the time rob got hold of it, the car was pretty much sorted, rob has made some subtle changes to the car however, the changes include-

(BODYWORK)- windscreen visor painted moorland green fitted above windscreen, outlaws rod n drag club sticker relocated to centre bottom (instead of centre top) of rear hatch window, clip on mirror replaced with peephole on o/s/f door, mooneyes sticker fitted to bulkhead.

(ENGINE)- rocker covers replaced with smoothed over rover items with victor series one wing badges fitted.

(INTERIOR)- small '50s 'hula' lady statue, rev counter/race tach fitted to dashtop.

please check out the link below for more info and pics.....

Admittedly, I know nearly nothing about this particular model, but man...that thing is cooler than a polar bears nose in January!

[and yes, KROQ is a radio station located in the Los Angeles area. Absolutely un-listenable now, but pretty decent bitd...]

At the beginning of this thread, it was mentioned that russ had a matt black fiat twin cam powered fb wagon before this that got written off, here is a pic of it taken by john phillips at hayling island in 1990, a few years before russ bought it from his mate disco dave wright, and also before dave painted it black, does anyone remember this car or better still, have anymore pics of it please?
    Cheers paul
